Message from Our President
What’s Next? We Take Care of Each Other
It’s taken me a while to compose this message, I find myself reflecting deeply on the journey that has brought us to this moment and what will be required of us moving forward. The 2024 presidential election has left many of us processing complex emotions – from disbelief to determination, from concern to renewed conviction.
But let me be clear: we have been here before. The NAACP has weathered every storm since 1909, and we have emerged stronger each time. Our power has never solely resided in who occupies the White House – it lives in the unshakeable spirit of our communities, in the determination of our youth, and the wisdom of our elders combined with our willingness to be invested in and foster community with one another.
The election results have sparked intense national debate, but they have also ignited something powerful within our membership – a renewed sense of purpose. Our phones haven't stopped ringing with people asking, "What can I do? How can I help? What’s next?"
This is the moment to channel our emotions into action. Here’s what you can do:
Come back to the NAACP Las Vegas Branch - if you haven’t been able to attend Branch meetings or don’t have the time to actively participate on a committee consider supporting upcoming events. Let’s be in community with one another - I want to see you.
Fight the urge to isolate - it’s easy to withdraw from the world when the future seems uncertain. I beg you to please resist this urge. The enemy/ our opposition/ those that don’t have our best interest at heart want us to be divided and in despair - our power is in being connected to and with one another. Call up a friend and get in community with one another.
Connect us with new partners - we’re looking for like-minded allies to collaborate with. Partners that share our deep desire to build community power, independent and apart from politics. The days ahead will require us to place faith in one another and not a singular individual.
To those feeling discouraged: I remind you that progress isn't always linear. Our ancestors didn't have the luxury of despair, and neither do we. Every setback has historically been the springboard for our greatest achievements.
To those feeling energized: We need your passion. We need your care. We need your ideas. We’re currently planning and devising the ways that we can create an ecosystem and social safety net for one another that isn’t (as) reliant on systems that weren’t intended for us to begin with. Bring your fervor and biggest dreams - I happen to think we can achieve them.
To our youth: Your voice matters now more than ever. Join our Youth Council, participate in our leadership development programs, and be an orchestrator of the future you deserve.
The path forward isn't about one election or one moment – it's about sustained, strategic action. It's about building power in our communities, protecting voting rights, creating economic power, and taking care of one another. These fundamentals of our mission remain unchanged, regardless of who is in the White House.
As your branch president, I make this commitment to you: we will not slow down. We will not back down. We will organize, mobilize, strategize and collaborate with even greater intensity.
Resilience is in our blood so let’s get to it.
In solidarity and strength,
QM
