3 Local Offices that Touch Your Life

…that you should be voting for

Early vote is on the horizon in Nevada. If you’re an active registered voter then your ballot is patiently waiting in your mailbox. Our early vote period begins this Saturday, May 25th through Friday, June 7th.

While every office on the ballot is important, the offices that most likely touch your day-to-day life typically get overlooked in favor of the more high profile offices. I’m here to tell you, don’t be swindled. Local, down-ballot offices have a more direct and often greater impact on your life. This primary season, I’ve got my eyes on three local offices that should get more of your attention this election season.

  1. Clark County School District Board of Trustees - Trustees of CCSD have two primary responsibilities: 1) manage the budget of the 5th largest school district in the country and 2) manage the superintendent. These duties, while grandiose in nature, have real and long-lasting impacts on our scholars and our community at-large. These elected leaders help govern the district that is responsible for shaping the minds of our future leaders.

  2. Judges - There are a variety of judge races on the primary ballot - all of which help determine how justice is administered in our community. Municipal level judges handle issues like traffic tickets and violations of city ordinance. District court judges are divided across three areas: criminal, family and civil.

    • Criminal court judges handle felonies.

    • Family court judges handle issues like adoption, adult & minor guardianship, etc.

    • Civil court judges handle disputes between individuals over $10k, constitutional law violations, etc.

Research the judges running in these offices to see which best aligns with your family’s values.

  3. Municipal level offices - In Las Vegas and North Las Vegas we have important mayoral and city council races. The City Council is responsible for the budget of the city, that means they determine how money is allocated for city services like parks and street clean-up. They create laws that shape our lives and levy taxes. These leaders are the curators of our neighborhoods and make decisions that determine lots of things - for example, if a piece of land will be a future grocery store or urban farm versus a new fast food restaurant.

These offices are where you can exercise your power as a voter because these offices indirectly touch our lives almost everyday. Don’t forfeit your seat at the table - make your voice heard.

Happy voting,

QM
